Testimonials

About Image

Maria Benkhelifa

“As a mathematician, I once believed that numbers could reveal every truth. But the Beyond Borders program in Malaysia taught me that while numbers inform, they do not feel, and the energy transformation cannot be shaped by data alone. Stepping into the lives of communities from different financial realities showed me that the true equations of change are written in human stories, in the quiet strength of workers, in the resilience of families, in the hopes of youth who dream of a fairer future. These experiences gave me not only social intelligence but also the strategic vision to see that energy transitions must be tailored to people’s circumstances, not imposed above them. Beyond Borders reminded me that real solutions are born when evidence meets empathy, when strategy listens to lived voices, and when we weave every story into the shared fabric of a just transition.”

“For me, the most meaningful part of Beyond Borders was engaging with participants from diverse cultures and backgrounds, not only during sessions but also in informal settings. From local government representatives and entrepreneurs to taxi drivers and youth groups, every interaction offered a new perspective. It was especially eye-opening to learn about sustainability challenges that are not as common in the UAE, such as those faced by Indigenous communities.

The program helped me become more empathetic and thoughtful in how I approach complex challenges. One impactful activity involved role-playing as different groups affected by climate transition, including national ministers, entrepreneurs, Indigenous communities, and people of determination. This experience deepened my commitment to pursuing solutions that are just, inclusive, and take into account the needs of all stakeholders.

Media is often described as the fourth power, and I believe digital storytelling is a skill that everyone should have. This program not only teaches that skill but does so in a way that connects you with people and stories in a completely different environment. Being abroad allowed me to see things from new angles and appreciate the role of community in shaping sustainability efforts. The memories and bonds formed with the Y4S team and the Malaysian community were truly heartwarming and unforgettable. ”

“The most meaningful part of Beyond Borders was hearing firsthand how the energy transition is reshaping people’s lives. Speaking with a solar panel installer and a car mechanic showed me the human side of sustainability beyond policies and technology.

The program broadened my perspective, reminding me to connect engineering with community voices and storytelling. It gave me the confidence to pursue roles where I can bridge technology, sustainability, and real human impact.

I’d recommend Beyond Borders because it’s transformative. You step outside your comfort zone, experience new cultures, and see how youth voices can drive real change.”

“The most meaningful part of Beyond Borders was talking to such a wide range of people - from politicians and company leaders to journalists and taxi drivers- and hearing their different perspectives on the energy transition. In just one week we gained a good understanding of their diverse needs, challenges, and ideas for a just and successful transition.

Studying energy and resource management, I’ve long focused on technology and markets, but the program made me understand how critical the social dimension of the transition is. It will help me bring this perspective into future roles and projects.

It was an inspiring week of interesting discussions, learning about a new country, and building friendships with other future sustainability leaders. For internationals like me, it’s a rare chance to connect in person with the other FSLs.”

“The most meaningful part of the program was definitely getting to know my fellow FSLs on a deeper level. I truly believe we built a solid friendship through this experience. What made it even more special was connecting with the Malaysian community, not just through our shared passion for sustainability, but also by crossing cultures and interests. That’s what made the whole experience so memorable and sentimental for me.

The program truly broadened my knowledge of sustainability. Before, I mostly understood it from the UAE’s perspective on green life transition, but through this program I was exposed to different struggles, perspectives, and approaches to sustainability. It expanded my perception of this transition in ways I never imagined. I even had the chance to interview government officials in Malaysia, and it was eye-opening to hear about their actions and agendas to make their communities safer and greener. As someone in the political field, it truly inspired me to approach this work with more humanity and empathy for both our nation and our people.

I highly recommend this program, especially to other youth. It not only deepens knowledge about sustainability but also broadens perspectives beyond our usual way of thinking. This program reminded me that the world is much bigger and more complex than we often realize, and it challenged me to think critically and openly about global issues.”

“My background is in a very specific area of sustainability, the built environment. Since joining the Y4S program, every session and workshop introduced a new area of sustainability with its own complexities, making me realize that sustainability is much broader than I had imagined.

The Y4S Beyond Borders program took this even further by showing me firsthand that sustainability does not just differ by sector, but also by country/region. The way it is understood, practiced, and achieved can vary completely depending on local context, challenges, and priorities. This made it clear to me that there is no single solution for sustainability. Each country begins its sustainability journey from a different starting point and has its own unique challenges and priorities.

Even within Malaysia itself, the transition towards clean energy is perceived differently from different perspectives. One of the most powerful parts of the program was seeing this diversity of perspectives in action. From interviewing small business owners in a very local bazaar to speaking with Malaysia’s former Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, I was really able to see how every voice is different and why every voice matters. It reinforced the idea that meaningful sustainability decisions must include everyone, from government leaders to community members whose voices are often overlooked. < />

Beyond the learning experience, what made this journey truly special was sharing it with my fellow FSLs. Even though we regularly meet for sessions and workshops, we usually only get a few minutes to chat before and after, so this trip gave us the chance to truly connect. We spent time learning, working, and exploring together, which strengthened our bonds and deepened the sense of family within the Y4S community. It was a rare experience where we were able to grow closer, have fun, and support one another while learning together.

This program opened my eyes not just to the complexity of sustainability, but also to the importance of collective action. It is a lesson I will carry forward in my work, making sure that every perspective and every voice is given the consideration it deserves.”

“Being part of the Y4S program as future sustainability leader has truly been a turning point in my life. From the very first session I attended, I felt that I was gaining something valuable, and I made a strong decision never to miss a single one. Each session and opportunity gave me new knowledge, skills, and confidence that I never expected, and every time I walked away inspired to share what I learned with my generation.

Before joining Y4S, I was a shy and less social person, but this program pushed me out of my comfort zone and opened a wider world where I could express myself and my ideas freely. The moment I was selected to join the Beyond Borders program in Malaysia was exceptional—it strengthened my belief in my dreams and gave me the courage to aim even higher.

Meeting inspiring mentors and fellow participants that becaes close friends, and being part of the wider Y4S family, made me proud to carry this identity wherever I go. This journey has shaped me in ways I cannot measure, and I am truly grateful for the opportunities, the skills, and the inspiration I have gained. I would wholeheartedly encourage every young person to be part of Y4S, because it is more than just a program—it is a life-changing experience.”
